Miami Beach residents and tourists who felt left out of Waymo’s Miami-area launch can now join the driverless party.

The ride-share app announced on Thursday that it has expanded its service area in Miami-Dade County to include the barrier island. Users can request rides to and from Miami Beach, Surfside and Bal Harbour.

Waymo’s service zone now covers 100 square miles, spokesperson Julia Ilina told the Miami Herald in an email. The company plans to continue expanding its South Florida footprint.

Previously, the robotaxi service had only been available on the mainland, with service reaching south to Dadeland, north to Northwest 46th Street and west to the Palmetto Expressway. The zone covers much of the city of Miami, including downtown, Brickell, Wynwood and Edgewater, as well as Coral Gables, South Miami and swaths of unincorporated Miami-Dade.

Waymo vehicles still don’t drive on major highways or expressways, although they will now cross causeways to reach Miami Beach, including the MacArthur and Venetian causeways. Ilina said Waymos are not currently crossing the Julia Tuttle Causeway. The company is continuing to test its cars on Miami-area highways.

Since opening rides up to the public in January, Waymo has become available to tens of thousands of riders in the Miami area.

Ilina said the company is continuing to invite more users from a waitlist on a rolling basis with plans to open the service up to everyone later this year.

People looking to call a Waymo in the Miami area can sign up for the waitlist using the Waymo app.
