PORT ST. LUCIE — The Tony award winning musical comedy, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is coming to Treasure Coast Theatre.

Considered a delightful den of comedic genius, the musical tells the story of six mid-pubescents as they vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime.

The tweens, all played by adults, disclose hysterical and moving stories from their home lives, as they spell their way through a series of vexing words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming ding of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.

Whether you were a robotics nerd or the captain of the cheerleading squad, we can all relate to middle school angst. Chances are you will recognize one of the six characters in yourself: the perfectionist, the loner, the kid whose parents are unavailable, the imposter, the sensitive one, and the overachiever.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” includes audience participation. Four lucky audience members will have the chance to get on stage and participate in the bee.

Winner of two Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” features a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

The show includes mature language and content, so it is not suitable for all audiences.

This staging by Treasure Coast Theatre is directed by Heidi Condon and stars local actors Libbie Baylinson; Charles Caloia; Ian Hodges; Jessica Lesko; Aaron Pelc; Star Reed; Chris Damone; Mark Nixon; and Sharon Owens.

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” runs weekends, March 13-29. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $26 plus tax and fees and may be purchased by phone at (772) 418-2439 or online at treasurecoasttheatre.com.
