TAMPA, Fla. — Hillsborough County is committing $24 million to help build the new “Fletcher District.”
The goal is to turn a former golf course at the University of South Florida into a mixed-use development.
The first phase will cover about 27 acres, located north of Fletcher Avenue and east of North 46th Street.
Plans include student and multi-family housing, a hotel and conference center, plus retail and restaurants.
The county is partnering with USF to help fund infrastructure and public safety improvements.
Those upgrades could include new roads, turn lanes, traffic signals, intersection improvements, and a pedestrian bridge.
Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan says the improvements will help support growth in the area.
Hagan said the upgrades are “not restricted to but include turn lanes, traffic improvements, a traffic signal, intersection improvements, new roads, and a pedestrian bridge.”
The pedestrian bridge would go over Fletcher Avenue.
The funding will come from the county’s Community Investment Tax.
Phase one of the project is expected to open in 2028.
