Downtown Doral Charter Upper School senior Sofía García is advancing in one of the nation’s most competitive scholarship programs after being named a semifinalist for the 2026 Jack Kent Cooke College Scholarship Program.

Of more than 6,500 applicants nationwide, only 568 students were selected as semifinalists. Those students now move forward to the final phase of review, with scholarship recipients scheduled to be announced in March.

For Sofia, the recognition reflects years of focused preparation. Born in Venezuela, she moved to the United States at the age of nine, an experience that shaped her determination and long-term academic vision.

“Moving to a new country at a young age taught me resilience,” Sofia said. “Adapting to a new environment encouraged me to work harder, seek opportunities, and believe in my ability to grow. I’m grateful for the support of my family and teachers along the way.”

Since joining Downtown Doral Charter Upper School in sixth grade, Sofía has pursued one of the school’s most rigorous academic tracks. She is currently an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, ranks within the top 15% of her graduating class, and maintains a 5.053 weighted GPA while completing IB, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment coursework.

Her academic direction has consistently aligned with her goal of becoming an attorney. She  currently serves as President of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and has participated actively in the school’s debate club, experiences that strengthened her analytical reasoning, leadership, and public speaking skills.

Outside the classroom, she volunteers at a South Florida law firm, gaining first hand exposure to legal practice and further solidifying her professional aspirations. She has also completed university-level online studies in philosophy and justice offered by Harvard University, expanding her understanding of legal theory and civic responsibility.

Sofia  plans to pursue a degree in law, with the intention of contributing to communities and expanding access to legal resources.

The Jack Kent Cooke College Scholarship Program recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, persistence, and commitment to service. The scholarship provides substantial support to selected students pursuing undergraduate studies at accredited four-year institutions.

For García, advancing to the final round affirms the value of steady effort and the importance of institutions that invest in student potential.

“Opportunities like this show students that dedication matters,” she said. “I’m thankful for institutions that believe in young people and create pathways to higher education. I hope it encourages other students to believe in themselves and pursue ambitious goals.”

As the March announcement approaches, García continues focusing on the same qualities that brought her this far — preparation, leadership, and long-term vision.
