ST. PETE BEACH, FL — The driver of a van that went into the Intracoastal Waterway and was carried south by the outgoing tide was rescued Sunday night, St. Pete Beach city officials said in a news release.
Emergency crews from St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue responded to reports that the van had entered the water at Blind Pass behind Mulligan’s Plaza around 8 p.m.
The van was fully submerged when crews arrived.
A rescue swimmer helped the driver out of the water and determined that he was alone in the van, officials said. Rapid Dive crews went into the water for a second search, confirming that the van was empty.
The driver was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
Land and water crews and units from the cities of Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, and St. Petersburg, as well as from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Sunstar, assisted in the rescue.
