Several Jacksonville City Council members are positioning themselves for new leadership roles as the council prepares for the annual election of its next president and vice president later this spring.

Current City Council Vice President Nick Howland (R – Group 3) announced he will run for council president, as is generally expected of the VP. Council members Ken Amaro (R – District 1), Chris Miller (R – Group 5), Rahman Johnson (D – District 14) and Joe Carlucci (R – District 5) are seeking the vice president position.

Candidates say their priorities remain focused on strengthening public safety, expanding affordable housing and promoting transparent leadership within city government.

Howland said collaboration among council members will be key if he is elected president, a position Kevin Carrico currently holds.

“I think a consensus-driven council drives stronger results for our community and I think our community deserves that,” Howland said.

Miller said his focus would be on helping the council work together more effectively.

“I am looking to help be a team builder who helps our city council and city move forward,” Miller said.

Johnson emphasized the importance of relationships and idea-sharing within the council.

“One of the things I think that’s most important is that relationships are formed, ideas are sharpened and that’s where leadership really begins moving our city forward,” Johnson said.

Carlucci said his goal would be to focus on progress rather than recognition.

“I’m not looking for the credit. I’m not looking to give long speeches. I just want our city to reach its full potential,” Carlucci said.

Amaro, the fourth council member running for vice president, said he has been committed since taking office to strengthening neighborhoods, supporting local businesses and empowering youth.

The Jacksonville City Council is expected to vote on its next president and vice president on May 26. Those elected will assume the roles at the beginning of the next Council year, on July 1.
