Tallahassee City Commission votes to advance sale of TMH to FSU, final approval expected later

Tallahassee Commissioners vote to approve transfer of Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare to Florida State University

  • March 11, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – City of Tallahassee Commissioners voted to approve the “transfer of city-owned hospital assets to Florida State University” Wednesday morning.

The final vote was 3-2, with Jeremy Matlow and Jack Porter dissenting.

During the meeting, 10 or more residents and officials spoke to the commissioners to voice their support or concern about the transfer to FSU.

An important issue that continues to be brought up during city commission meetings and in the community is that Florida A&M University and Tallahassee State College might not get a seat on the Health Board. Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox has been a strong advocate for this measure to be secured in the transfer. At one point, both TMH and FSU agreed to FAMU having a spot on the board, but then TSC expressed interest in having a seat on the board.

The agreement voted upon by commissioners on Wednesday morning did not have language in it to guarantee the two universities a seat on the board.

During the meeting, Commissioner Matlow also made a substitute motion that would address the following:

Matlow makes a substitute motion, to bring the issue back with the definitive agreements signed.

2. City control over board appointments

3. Beefed up charity care policy

4. Bond issuing clarity that the city is not responsible.

Porter seconded the motion, asking to amend the substitute to make sure an annual report is brought to the city commission, not just city staff.

However, Mayor John Dailey said he could not support the motion, as it is “a strike everything and start over.”

Matlow also addressed the automatic transfer deadline of April 1. “We have no clarity on why there’s this arbitrary deadline,” he said. “I don’t think rushing this process makes sense.”

But, Mayor Dailey responded, saying April 1 is not the transfer date.
