Jacksonville couple sues roofing company, says they paid thousands for unfinished work

  • March 12, 2026

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A Jacksonville couple has filed a civil suit against a roof repair company they say took their money, left a hole in their roof, and stopped responding to calls and texts.

Doug Mahon and Pearl Dunlap hired Atlantic Coastal Enterprises in October. They said they paid $3,642 for the work in December, but after that, workers only came out twice, leaving a hole in the roof and never coming back.

The couple says the owner Brian Bryce was the main point of contact and wasn’t cooperating.

“Kinda went radio silent, countless phone calls, countless text messages, voicemails, what have you — and I can’t say he never answered, but the majority of the time I couldn’t get ahold of the guy,” Mahon said.

In February, Mahon and Dunlap hired a second contractor, who completed the roof in two days.

“The roof is done, but there’s damage to the walls, damage to the floor, which now I have to replace — and my health, I’m sorry, I am really angry with my health. I have COPD. Living in this has been damaging,” Dunlap said.

The pair says the company left a trailer in their yard for a month, adding that Bryce returned in March and encountered the new workers completing the roof. Mahon said he was surprised to see the owner after repeated failed attempts to reach him.

“He said no, you’re not getting your money back. He told me straight up, you’re not getting your money back,” Mahon said.

Dunlap said the lack of communication compounded the damage to their home.

“Never communicated, very unprofessional — and I even called him. Called him, texted him, ‘When you coming?’ Nothing. And it’s just like, this is the kind of business you are running? This is horrible. Now my roof is damaged, the side of my wall is damaged, and it caused major mold in my house,” Dunlap said.

Mahon and Dunlap are scheduled to appear in court in April. Atlantic Coastal Enterprises did not respond to a request for comment.
