PENSACOLA, Fla. – Baseball kicked off the Studer’s Blue Wahoos Stadium Challenge Wednesday evening. They took on the Carroll Pios in nonconference action. The Eagles (4-3) got things started off on the right foot, holding off a late rally for a 11-10 extra innings victory over the Pios (7-4).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
– A pair of big hits in early innings had the Eagles ahead 4-0 after two. A two-RBI triple to left center from Jacob Carney in the first and a two-run homer from Carter Kelley in the second paved the way for the early lead.
Â
– The Pios left their mark in the fifth. A sacrifice grounder to short kicked off the scoring, while mistakes from Edgewood University helped cut the lead to 4-3.
Â
– Kelley continued to contribute offensively in the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly to center plating a run. Hayden Hellenbrand took a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to add another run, before Hellenbrand added on an eighth-inning single for a 7-3 edge.
Â
– Carroll stormed back in the eighth. A pair of singles, a fielder’s choice, and a sacrifice fly pushed them ahead 8-7. The Eagles pulled back ahead 10-8 in the top of the ninth with a throwing error and a Carter Kelley two-RBI double to right field. The Pios struck back to force extras with a sacrifice fly and a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
– Edgewood University got on the board in the top of the tenth, an Aidan Kammer triple to right bring in in a run. While Carroll once more threatened with a runner on second with one out, the Eagles shut down the threat for a well-earned victory.
Â
Â
– Carney, Mac Vesperman, and Kelley each recorded two this to pace the squad. Carney earned a double and a triple, while Kelley posted five RBIs.
Â
– 10 different Edgewood University players earned at least one run in the win.
Â
– Kyle Prindle tallied three walks.
Â
– Aiden Shumaker struck out six in the start, allowing only three runs.
Â
– Cole Pulliam stepped up in the end to clamp down on the Pios, striking out three in two innings pitched to claim the victory.
