As gas prices have spiked since the joint U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran began on Feb. 28, Democrats in the Legislature on Thursday called for a temporary suspension in the state gas tax.
“In the last 60 days, we haven’t done anything to address Florida’s affordability crisis,” Senate Democratic Leader Lori Berman of Boca Raton said in a released statement. “We’re sitting on billions of dollars in reserves; the least we can do for Floridians during this time of economic crisis and war is provide relief at the gas pumps. I’m proud to join my colleagues in the Florida Senate Democratic Caucus in this latest effort to make Florida more affordable.”
The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Florida rose 47.7 cents in the last week according to AAA.
The state fuel tax is 25.3 cents per gallon.
“Floridians were already struggling with the skyrocketing cost of living and now they’re being squeezed even more at the pump,” House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskel of Tampa said in a released statement. “Despite Democrats talking about it every week, this legislative session has been a failure to help Florida’s working families and seniors. The least we could do is to suspend this tax and save people a few dollars every time they fill up.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis has taken aim at the gas tax before, suspending the tax for the month of October in 2022. He has also pressed the Legislature to approve rebates for tolls for frequent users of toll roads for temporary periods.
