Riding Monsters Unchained for the first time is one of those Epic Universe moments you won’t forget.
If you’re planning a visit to Universal’s brand-new park, there’s a good chance this attraction is already high on your must-do list. The ride blends some pretty impressive animatronics, intense motion, and a whole lot of classic Universal Monsters energy into one wild experience. But after riding it ourselves, we realized there were a few things we definitely wish we’d known before stepping into Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s lab. Here are six things we wish we knew before riding Monsters Unchained at Epic Universe.
You’ll Need to Use Lockers
Let’s start with the one that can slow you down if you aren’t expecting it. Before you board Monsters Unchained, you’ll need to store loose belongings in a locker.
That means backpacks, large bags, and anything that could fly around during the ride. You’ll get directed to the locker area first, so if you’re walking up to the queue carrying a bunch of stuff, that can add a few extra minutes to your overall wait.
Epic Universe Lockers
The process itself is pretty straightforward. The lockers here are larger than the ones you might be used to at other Universal parks, which is great news if you’re carrying a slightly bigger bag.
They also use facial recognition to open and close, so you usually just scan your face, and the locker pops right back open when you return. If the scanner gives you trouble, you can also open your locker using your park ticket. It’s a handy backup option to know about before you ride.
Your Seat Choice Actually Matters
Not all seats on Monsters Unchained feel the same, and we definitely noticed the difference once we boarded. The ride vehicles have four seats per row, and the inner seats sit slightly higher than the ones on the outside. The outer seats are positioned a bit lower and tend to feel a little more open.
If you have longer legs, you might appreciate those outer seats more. They can feel roomier and give you a little extra space to get comfortable during the ride’s more intense moments. If you care about comfort, it’s worth paying attention to where you sit.
You Might Get Splashed
This one caught us completely off guard. There’s a quick moment during the attraction when riders get hit with a splash of water. It isn’t a full soak by any means, but it’s enough to surprise you if you aren’t ready for it.
When that scene starts unfolding, you may want to cover your face or keep your mouth closed just in case. The splash happens fast and is over just as quickly, but it’s definitely one of those little details you’ll appreciate knowing about beforehand.
The Motion Can Be Intense
Monsters Unchained isn’t exactly a calm, gentle dark ride. The ride vehicles move a lot and can tilt, swing, and shift quickly throughout the attraction. The motion adds to the chaos of the story, especially when the monsters start causing trouble, but it can also be a lot for guests who are sensitive to motion-heavy rides.
If attractions with aggressive movement tend to make you dizzy or nauseous, you may want to prepare yourself before boarding. Some riders absolutely love the intensity, while others need a moment afterward to recover.
It’s Intense, But Not Truly Terrifying
With all those Universal Monsters involved, you might expect this ride to be extremely scary. In reality, it lands somewhere in the middle.
Yes, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and several other monsters appear throughout the attraction. There are loud moments, sudden appearances, and plenty of dramatic scenes.
However, the overall experience feels more like an adventurous chase than a full horror attraction. If you’ve ever ridden DINOSAUR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the scare level feels pretty similar to that kind of thrill. It’s intense and exciting without crossing into full haunted house territory.
You Don’t Have to Rush Here First Thing
One of the biggest surprises we noticed after visiting Epic Universe was the wait time for Monsters Unchained. While it’s a major attraction, the line often moves faster than you might expect. We’ve seen average waits around ten to fifteen minutes, and even on busier days, the posted time can stay under forty minutes.
Because of that, this may not need to be the very first ride you tackle in the morning. You can often knock out a few other attractions and still come back to Monsters Unchained later without facing a massive wait.
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
Epic Universe is packed with exciting rides, but Monsters Unchained easily stands out as one of the most memorable experiences in the park. A little preparation can go a long way toward making that first ride even better.
As always, keep it right here at AllEars for the latest tips, tricks, and updates to help you plan the perfect theme park day.
