Spring breakers are getting ready to head out for sun and fun, and it’s no surprise that many are making a beeline for Florida. According to new booking data from AAA, the three most popular domestic spring break destinations in the U.S. are all in the Sunshine State: Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Tampa is not far behind either, coming in at number five. Travelers are clearly chasing warm weather again this year, and Florida dominates thanks to its reliable sunshine, beaches and theme parks.
Topping the list is Orlando, which continues to draw crowds to its theme park empire. The city is home to Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, making it a magnet for families with kids and thrill-seekers alike. Between roller coasters, character parades and sprawling resorts, Orlando a prime destination for a packed spring break itinerary.
The second most popular spring break destination is just three hours south. Fort Lauderdale delivers a different kind of spring break, with palm-lined canals and a long stretch of golden sand along Fort Lauderdale Beach. The city mixes laid-back beach days with a lively waterfront scene. Las Olas Boulevard offers restaurants, bars and boutiques within easy reach of the ocean, making it a favorite for travelers who want sun during the day and nightlife after dark.
At number three is Miami, where spring break gets turned up to 11. South Beach is the spot, with pastel art deco hotels, beach parties and a nightlife scene that goes into the early morning. But beyond the party reputation, Miami also delivers world-class food, culture and easy access to turquoise Atlantic waters.
Travelers heading to any of these hot spots may pay a bit more to get there this year, as AAA reports that average round-trip airfare to domestic spring break destinations is about $815, roughly 2% higher than last year. But after a long winter, these sunny destinations are worth it.
If you want sunshine, energy and plenty of people watching, Florida clearly has the market cornered this spring. But if you want to avoid crowds, consider AAA’s list your guide to where not to go.
