JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (WBMA) — Jacksonville State University (JSU) announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Science in Aviation, set to begin in Fall 2026.

The university said the program was approved by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education on March 13, 2026.

The university said the degree is designed to prepare students for careers in commercial aviation, aviation management, and public safety aviation.

It will offer three concentrations—Aviation Management, Commercial Aviation, and Public Safety Aviation—providing students with practical skills and industry knowledge for a variety of aviation-related roles.

Jacksonville State officials emphasized that the program combines strong academic training with hands-on experience. The Commercial Aviation concentration includes structured flight training aligned with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards, enabling students to earn credentials such as Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot certifications with Instrument and Multi-Engine ratings. Graduates are expected to complete 300 flight hours as part of the program.

The university said Public Safety Aviation concentration focuses on preparing first responders to utilize aviation and unmanned aircraft systems in emergency and public safety operations. The Aviation Management concentration equips students for leadership and operational roles in airports, airlines, and other aviation organizations.

“This program represents an exciting step forward for Jacksonville State University and workforce development in our region,” said Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr.. “The aviation industry is growing rapidly across Alabama and the Southeast, creating new opportunities for students and workforce needs for our state. Our program will equip graduates with the skills needed to succeed in a wide range of aviation careers.”

The university said students interested in the Commercial Aviation concentration must first be admitted to Jacksonville State and submit a secondary application by May 15. Prospective students can request additional information or updates through the university’s Aviation inquiry form, while current students considering a major change are advised to consult their academic advisors.

Jacksonville State officials said it is also in the process of securing FAA Part 141 authorization for ground school and establishing partnerships with certified flight training providers. The university has also launched a national search for its first Aviation Department Head.

With its location near major regional airport hubs in Atlanta, Birmingham, Huntsville, and Chattanooga, the university said Jacksonville State aims to meet growing demand for skilled aviation professionals while supporting economic development in northeast Alabama.
