A domestic violence call Wednesday night ended with a man shot dead by police and his pregnant wife taken to a nearby hospital, Sweetwater police said.

Four officers answered a call about a domestic altercation in the 11600 block of Southwest Seventh Terrace around 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, said Sweetwater police executive communications director Alvaro Zabaleta. They saw a woman about five months into pregnancy and a man with a knife.

Zabaleta said “a confrontation ensued” and at least one officer fired. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue declared the man dead on the scene and took his wife to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital because “there was noticeable bruising,” Zabaleta said.

Investigation of the police shooting will be handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as is standard. The death investigation will be handled by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, which has yet to release the name of the man shot.
