Tampa, FL – Tampa city officials have approved plans for a new 250-foot observation wheel called Tampa WOW, short for Wheel Over Water, to be built along the downtown waterfront.
The privately funded project, estimated to cost $20 million, is designed to give visitors a panoramic view of the city and surrounding bay area.
According to city records, the Tampa City Council voted Thursday to approve the development plan submitted by local developer Tony Miller.
The attraction will not use taxpayer funds and is being financed entirely through private investment.
The proposed site is near the Florida Aquarium and the Tampa Convention Center, connecting with existing tourism destinations along the waterfront.
The wheel will feature enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas and rides lasting approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
Project planners said it is intended to serve both local residents and visitors, adding to the growing list of downtown attractions.
Miller said construction is expected to begin in 2025, with an anticipated opening date in late 2026, pending final permitting and safety reviews.
City officials have stated that the project aligns with Tampa’s broader downtown development plans and tourism growth strategy.
No public funds or incentives were allocated to the project, according to council records.
Once complete, Tampa WOW will become one of the tallest observation wheels in Florida, offering elevated views of the city skyline and Hillsborough Bay.
