MIAMI — While Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs have served as driving forces behind Orlando‘s success since the NBA All-Star break, the Magic have also received a needed boost from elsewhere on the roster.
In the 10 games since the league break entering Saturday’s road matchup with the Heat, second-year forward Tristan da Silva has averaged 13.5 points on 47.6% shooting from 3-point range alongside 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals during 31.3 minutes per night.
In the past two games specifically against Cleveland and Washington, da Silva scored 23 and 26 points, respectively, while shooting a combined 6-for-14 from beyond the arc.
“I tell him all the time when he’s out there (to) look for his shots (and) be aggressive,” said Banchero, who also mentioned da Silva’s poise on the court. “I also think he’s really stepped it up on defense, too, especially when we got back from break. He’s really been guarding. So, I think his defense has been great and he’s been making shots.”
Added Bane: “He hit a lot of big shots. He’s playing out of his mind right now.”
Help has also come off the bench from third-year pro Jett Howard, who’s seen significant minutes in reserve while appearing in nine of the past 10 games since the break. Howard had only seen limited minutes in five of the 10 games leading up to the break.
Entering Saturday, Howard averaged 7.2 points on 40% from 3-point range with 2.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists and half-a-block during 18.5 minutes per night in the last 10 games.
Magic coach Jamahl Mosley shared why Howard has been able to play well despite not seeing the court as often earlier in the season.
“Well a big portion of it is that he stayed ready when he wasn’t playing,” Mosley said. “When bodies go down, we ask the next man to step up (and) we do it by committee, but what Jett has done is that he’s stayed consistent with his work ethic, knowing the game plan (and) understanding we need him to do.”
Orlando will need more of the same from da Silva and Howard when the team travels to Atlanta on Monday.
Magic thankful for Isaac update
Although Jonathan Isaac suffered a left knee sprain during Thursday’s game against Washington, the Magic were relieved to learn that the injury wasn’t worse than they initially feared.
“I mean, I’m glad it wasn’t anything serious, but you still hate to see something like that happen to a guy who has been through so much,” Wendell Carter Jr. said. “He is) the ultimate teammate, the ultimate pro. Nothing he does affects this team in a negative way. He’s lifting up guys, giving guys pointers during the games, and when he gets out there, he plays his heart out.”
Ruled out Friday for Saturday’s game against the Heat, neither Isaac, Franz Wagner (left high ankle sprain injury management) nor Anthony Black (left lateral abdominal strain) traveled with the team to Miami.
“He’s reacted well, considering exactly what it could have been, and I think that’s where the blessing is in it, that it’s not as bad as thought it was going to be,” Mosley said about Isaac. “To just come out as a knee sprain is a very good thing considering the circumstances.”
