City council members voted in favor of creating the giant wheel that is scheduled to open in late 2026.

TAMPA, Fla. — A new attraction was officially approved by Tampa City Council members to be built downtown, showcasing sweeping views of the skyline and water.

A 250-foot-tall observation wheel called Wheel Over Water (WOW!) is slated to open in late 2026 in the Channel District neighborhood after officials voted in favor of the attraction at Thursday’s meeting.

Site preparations will start in the coming weeks, just north of The Florida Aquarium. The wheel will feature climate-controlled gondolas with passengers inside for 20 to 30 minutes.

The $20 million being used to create the wheel was a private investment, so there will be no cost to taxpayers.

“Tampa WOW! isn’t just about the view. It’s about creating a world-class family destination and energizing downtown with new opportunities for connection and engagement,” Developer Tony Miller said in a previous statement.

The base of the wheel will have concessions with food and beverages, along with luggage storage for cruise passengers looking to explore the area. It will also create more activation downtown between The Florida Aquarium, Amalie Arena, the Water Street neighborhood and other nearby spots.

The two council members who voted against the landmark were Bill Carlson and Lynn Hurtak.

Carlson brought up concerns about how this will affect parking in the nearby area. He said it might hurt The Florida Aquarium’s business in the long run.

He also said the attraction isn’t unique to Tampa, as places like Orlando, London and Singapore also have them.

“I think when you’re trying to decide which city to go to and the experiences in it, you want it to be different,” he said.

Hurtak brought up concerns about lightning from the wheel. She said most residents who live over there have floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and the lightning from the wheel will keep them awake at night.

Despite the two council members being against it, the plans still passed with a 4-2 vote.Â
