One of Fort Myers Beach’s most recognizable attractions is celebrating a major milestone this month. The Pieces of Eight Pirate Ship, which has entertained thousands of families and visitors on the waters of Matanzas Bay, will celebrate its 20th anniversary on March 26 at Salty Sam’s Marina.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, David Braithwaite, the original captain, owner, and builder of the pirate ship, will return for the celebration and participate in a special dockside ceremony honoring two decades of pirate adventures. The pirate ship first toured the waters of Virginia Beach, and then a little time in Key west before making Fort Myers Beach home.
The anniversary event will feature a traditional maritime champagne christening on the bow of the ship, a pirate-themed toast, and a ceremonial coin toss by the crew into the bay for good luck. Past crew members will also be recognized for their role in helping create one of Fort Myers Beach’s most memorable experiences.
Following the ceremony, the ship will depart on a 4:30 PM “20th Anniversary Birthday Cruise,” where Braithwaite will share stories about designing and building the vessel and the early days of the pirate cruise that has since become a Fort Myers Beach tradition.
For 20 years, the Pieces of Eight Pirate Ship has sailed the waters around Estero Island, delighting guests with cannon fire, pirate comedy, sunset views, and interactive adventures for both kids and adults.
“This ship has created memories for countless families visiting Fort Myers Beach,” said event organizers. “Celebrating twenty years with the man who built the ship makes this moment even more special.”
The celebration will also include a birthday cake for guests aboard the anniversary cruise and a tribute to the many crew members who have brought the pirate experience to life over the past two decades.
The Pieces of Eight Pirate Ship departs from Salty Sam’s Marina on Fort Myers Beach, where it has become a staple attraction for visitors seeking a fun and memorable way to experience Southwest Florida’s waterfront.
Media outlets are invited to attend the dockside ceremony and anniversary cruise festivities.
