The Sanibel Public Library provides a variety of programming for adults and children.
With support from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, the library has launched a series of virtual author talks to include bestselling authors and thought leaders. The next one will take place on March 24 at 2 p.m. with award-winning journalist Shoshana Walter and a special guest host, bestselling and award-winning author Barbara Ellen Kingsolver. They will chat about Walter’s book, “Rehab: An American Scandal.”
Walter is a reporter for the Marshall Project covering the criminal justice system. Her reporting has been honored as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and Selden Ring, and she has won the Knight Award for Public Service, Edward R. Murrow Award, and Livingston Award for Young Journalists. Walter started her work on the treatment system at The Center for Investigative Reporting, where her work appeared in The New York Times Magazine, in newspapers and on NPR stations across the country.
Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist and poet. Her widely known works include “The Poisonwood Bible” and “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.” In 2023, Kingsolver was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for “Demon Copperhead.” Her work often focuses on topics such as social justice, biodiversity, and the interaction between humans and their communities and environments.

R.E.A.D. to Rizzo will take place on March 18 from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. Youths will practice reading and reading out loud with Rizzo, a trained Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) therapy dog. Registration is required by contacting esherman@sanlib.org.
On March 18, Crafternoon: Paint Your Own Flower Pot will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants will decorate their own ceramic flower pot. A variety of craft supplies will be available, along with examples and guidance.
Family Movie Night will take place on March 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. The film will be the Disney classic “Encanto.” All ages welcome. Popcorn and snacks will be provided.
On March 20, The Battle of the Atlantic 1942 will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. with staffer Duane E. Shaffer. The Atlantic War was the longest campaign in World War II and ran from September 1939 to May 1945 (five years, eight months and five days). Winston Churchill once said: “The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.” The North Atlantic was a critical front. The war might have been lost had Germany succeeded in severing the supply line of American ships and aid. The war was still going Hitler’s way and England would have had to sue for peace.
AI Open Lab: Learn, Try, Create with ChatGPT will take place on March 25 from 11 a.m. to noon. Attendees will get hands-on help using ChatGPT. They will explore real examples, like writing, homework help and creative projects.
On March 25, Crafternoon: Symmetry Painting will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Open to ages 5 and up, participants will make a one-of-a kind painting. A variety of craft supplies will be available, along with examples and guidance.
