JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Jacksonville was hit with another round of severe weather Monday, days after an EF-0 tornado destroyed the city’s American Legion post last Thursday.
High winds and heavy rain moved through the area throughout the afternoon. Jacksonville Fire Chief Tee Tallman urged residents to stay alert as severe weather arrived.
“We look at several different trusted sources to get the most accurate information possible,” Tallman said.
Schools, daycares, and some businesses in Onslow County closed early Monday to keep people off the roads.
Tallman said drivers who needed to be out should take precautions in wet conditions.
“Just make sure you’re monitoring the weather conditions and increasing your stopping distances. If you don’t have any reason to be out, there’s no reason to,” Tallman said.
Onslow County was one of several eastern Carolina counties under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. Monday. The threat of severe weather, including possible tornadoes, continued into the evening.
Tallman said the tornado last week did not change preparations for Monday’s storm and that storms like this are harder to prepare for compared to snow or a hurricane.
