WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The race for Florida House District 87 is entering its final stretch as voters prepare to choose their next state representative.

Last month’s primary elections set up a special election matchup between Republican Jon Maples and Democratic candidate Emily Gregory.

Gregory joined ARC Florida on March 16 and talked about the upcoming special legislative session.

The winner will represent a district that includes Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Riviera Beach, Juno Beach, Lake Park, Palm Beach Shores, and parts of Lake Worth Beach.

The seat has remained vacant during the current legislative session in Tallahassee. However, the timing of the special election means the winner will take office in time for the upcoming special legislative session focused on redistricting.

Lawmakers are expected to have just four days during that session to redraw congressional district boundaries.

The last time Florida lawmakers took up redistricting, Democrats lost a congressional seat in North Florida, raising questions about whether the process could again become a partisan fight.
