John Legend brings “A Night of Songs & Stories” to Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center

GIVE HIM THE GREEN LIGHT. JOHN LEGEND IS GETTING ON THE ROAD AND HE’S MAKING A STOP RIGHT HERE IN THE CITY. BEAUTIFUL. THE EGOT WINNER BRINGS HIS TOUR THIS THURSDAY NIGHT. I RECENTLY TALKED WITH THE SUPERSTAR ABOUT WHAT MAKES THIS PERFORMANCE SO SPECIAL. FLORIDA HAS A LOT OF MY FANS THERE, AND I’VE GOT SOME FAMILY IN THE CENTRAL FLORIDA AND SOUTH FLORIDA AREAS. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS SHOW IS IT’S REALLY INTIMATE. IT’S A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO REALLY GET TO KNOW ME AS AN ARTIST, AND I THINK A LOT OF MY FANS APPRECIATE SEEING BEHIND THE CURTAIN A LITTLE BIT MORE, UNDERSTANDING MY LIFE STORY A LITTLE BIT MORE, UNDERSTANDING MY UPBRINGING AND WHAT MADE ME THE ARTIST THAT I AM. AND THEN HEARING THE SONGS IN SUCH A STRIPPED DOWN FORMAT, YOU KNOW, AN OSCAR, A TONY, MULTIPLE EMMYS AND GRAMMYS. JOHN LEGEND IS ONE OF THE ELITE FEW TO REACH EGOT STATUS, BUT THURSDAY NIGHT, THE DOCTOR PHILLIPS CENTER. IT’S PURE PERFORMANCE. JUST JOHN A PIANO AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HIS HITS. WELL, THERE’S LOTS OF STORIES. YOU KNOW, YOU MAY BE WONDERING, IS JOHN LEGEND MY REAL NAME AND HOW I GOT THE NICKNAME AND WHAT I HAD TO DO TO SECURE THE TRADEMARK. I TALK ABOUT ALL THAT AT THE SHOW IS THAT CONNECTION THAT KEEPS THE MUSICIAN FRESH, EVEN WHEN HE’S PIVOTING FROM THE CONCERT STAGE TO THE BIG CHAIR. ON NBC’S THE VOICE, IT’S INSPIRING JUST WORKING WITH THESE YOUNG ARTISTS WHO HAVE SO MUCH HOPE AND SO MUCH TALENT, SO MUCH TO CONTRIBUTE TO MUSIC. I FIND IT REINVIGORATING FOR ME AS AN ARTIST TO KEEP KIND OF RENEWING MY EXCITEMENT, TO CONTINUE TO CREATE AND TO BE THE BEST ARTIST THAT I CAN BE. THROUGH MY CONVERSATIONS WITH THESE YOUNG ARTISTS, THEN OUR CONVERSATION WAS CRASHED BY JOHN’S WIFE. YOU’RE GOING TO BE ON ORLANDO TV TWO NEWS. IT’S ON TV, BABY. OH MY GOD, I’M JUST MAKING AN ICED COFFEE. MY WIFE NICOLE SAYS, HELLO, BIG FAN. THEY’RE. THERE YOU GO. JUST LIKE THIS MOMENT WITH HIS WIFE, CHRISSY. JOHN SAYS, GET READY FOR THURSDAY NIGHT. IT’LL BE UNFORGETTABLE. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THIS SHOW, YOU REALLY HAVEN’T REALLY GOTTEN TO KNOW ME. AND AS DEEP OF A WAY AS YOU CAN. AND THIS SHOW IS REALLY SPECIAL IN THAT WAY, AND I’M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO BRINGING IT TO ORLANDO FOR THE FIRST TIME. AND SO EXCITED TO BE ALL THROUGHOUT CENTRAL FLORIDA NEXT WEEK. AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A BEAUTIFUL TIME. OH. I STILL GET NERVOUS. TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR THE DOCTOR PHILLIPS CENTER PRESENTS JOHN LEGEND A NIGHT OF SONGS AND STORIES LIVE ON STAGE AT THE WALT DISNEY THEATER THIS THURSDAY NIGHT AT EIGHT. WHAT AN AWESOME CONVERSATION WITH HIM. YEAH. WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS? OH, YOU KNOW, WE DIDN’T EVEN I MEAN, YES, CHRISSY CRASHING THAT COLD COFFEE. YOU KNOW WHERE JOHN WAS TRYING TO DO A ZOOM INTERVIEW AND, YOU KNOW, TAKE CARE OF CHATTING WITH ORLANDO. BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS SO COOL WHEN HE TALKED ABOUT THE VOICE AND HOW INSPIRING IT IS TO SEE THESE YOUNG ARTISTS AND SORT OF REMEMBERING THAT HUNGER WHEN YOU’RE FIRST STARTING OUT. AND WE DIDN’T EVEN GET TO IN THIS PIECE THAT HE’S WORKING ON SOMETHING WITH SIR ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, IT’S BREAKING NEWS, BREAKING NEWS. WE COULDN’T TALK ABOUT IT IN THE STORY UNTIL NOW, BUT HE’S GOING TO WORK ON, YOU KNOW, CATS THE MUSICAL. THEY’RE CREATING A NEW VERSION CALLED THE JELLICLE BALL, AND HE’S ONE OF THESE CREATIVE MINDS. JOHN LEGEND IS BEHIND THIS COMING TO BROADWAY. THERE YOU GO. OH, I KNOW HIS HAND IS IN IT. IT’S GOING TO BE GREAT. I LOVE THAT WE DIDN’T EVEN TOUCH ON THAT THERE.
