The first Memphis Grizzlies regular-season game was action-packed. Memphis trailed by as many as 15 points before a 14-0 third-quarter run and a late Ja Morant basket in a 128-122 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

The clock turns fast in the NBA. Memphis must now switch its attention to the Miami Heat.

Miami and Memphis played on Oct. 17 in a Grizzlies preseason win, but the mentality switches for the regular season.

Morant didn’t play in that preseason matchup, and his status for the Oct. 24 contest is up in the air. Morant and Grizzlies shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are both questionable due to ankle soreness. For Morant, it’s the same left ankle that kept him out of the preseason. Caldwell-Pope is being bothered by his right ankle.

The Grizzlies are already without Ty Jerome (calf), Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe), Vince Williams Jr. (heel), Zach Edey (ankle) and Brandon Clarke (knee).

Miami lost its season opener 125-121 against the Orlando Magic. New shooting guard Norman Powell led the Heat with 28 points in the loss.

One change the Heat made against the Magic from its preseason game against the Grizzlies was using a smaller lineup. All-Star big man Bam Adebayo played power forward and seven-footer Kel’el Ware started at center in the preseason game. Miami brought Ware off the bench and started forward Nikola Jovic against the Magic.

With Memphis having depth issues in the frontcourt, matching up against Ware and Adebayo will be one of the biggest keys to the game.

The Grizzlies have won the last three regular-season meetings against the Heat. Miami is 30-27 all-time against Memphis.
