Miami-Dade County officials are warning residents not to fall for fraudulent text messages claiming they owe money for unpaid traffic citations.

According to the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office, the scam messages falsely appear to come from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and urge recipients to click a link or make a payment.

Officials say the messages are fake and are not connected to either the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office or the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Residents should not click on any links, send any money or provide personal information. The message should be deleted and reported as spam.

Officials also stressed that neither the county tax collector’s office nor the state sends text messages demanding payment or directing residents to links for traffic violations.

Anyone who is unsure whether a message is legitimate should contact the agency directly through its official website or phone number.
