ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — The Fort Pierce City Commission is set to hold a special meeting Thursday morning to resolve a pay dispute between the city and its Teamsters union workers after negotiations between the two sides reached an impasse.

City officials and union representatives agree in principle on a 5% wage increase for dozens of municipal employees, but remain divided over the minimum hourly raise. The union is seeking a pay boost of either 5% or $1.60 per hour, whichever is greater, while the city has proposed 5% or $1.20 per hour, whichever is greater.

Because the two sides have been unable to reach a final agreement, the matter now moves to the city commission, which, under Florida law, has the authority to settle contract disputes involving public employees once an impasse is declared.

During Thursday’s meeting, both the city and the union are expected to present their final offers. Commissioners will then decide how to resolve the disagreement, potentially selecting one proposal or establishing a compromise.

The negotiations are limited to wages and do not impact other portions of the existing contract. Any approved raises would be retroactive to Oct. 1, 2025.

The bargaining unit includes a range of city employees who support daily operations, including equipment operators, mechanics, animal care staff, code enforcement officers, community service officers, non-sworn crime analysts, facilities maintenance workers, marina staff, records personnel, and more.

The special meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Fort Pierce City Hall. CLICK HERE to review the agenda and proposals. If you would like to watch the livestream, CLICK HERE.
