Perhaps the last thing fans think about when attending THE PLAYERS Championship is first aid. But when there’s an injury or, especially, a serious health concern, that can quickly change. The need for medical care can arise at any time, even when enjoying a favorite sporting event.

Fortunately, the tournament has a decades-long relationship with the region’s largest health system, Baptist Health, which, along with Wolfson Children’s Hospital, serves as the official First Aid Sponsor for THE PLAYERS.

Health care professionals stand ready to assist when needed. The multi-unit First Aid Headquarters located near the No. 8 green is the primary facility, capable of addressing just about any emergency you can think of.

Other, smaller first aid stations are conveniently located throughout the course: at No. 4 tee, No. 9 tee, No. 15 tee and near the No. 10 tee. These take care of many minor injuries or ailments, while often serving as a place of first contact for those experiencing a more serious event.

Dr. Jeff Smowton is an ER physician for Baptist and serves as chairman of spectator first aid for the tournament. He’s been involved with this important service for more than 30 years. He said he has about 125 volunteers at THE PLAYERS, many affiliated with Baptist Health as well as some from other health-related entities.

For Baptist Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital, the relationship with the tournament is an important one.

“Baptist is a huge supporter of the community, for sure,” said Smowton.

But medical care is but one aspect of this relationship.

The Family Lounge, located adjacent to the First Aid Headquarters, is an air-conditioned space designed primarily for parents with young children. There are private areas for changing diapers, as well as feeding and pumping. Complimentary Pampers and wipes are available here, as well.

Meanwhile, THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health at Wolfson Children’s Hospital also had representation onsite. This facility, which provides a wealth of services to promote safe and healthy childhoods, helps kids avoid the need to seek emergency medical care.

Center staff provided families with important educational materials on child safety.

In addition, babies born tournament week at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, Baptist Medical Center South, Baptist Medical Center Beaches and Baptist Medical Center Clay received a special baby outfit.

Babies in Wolfson Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit during the tournament received a commemorative outfit and a card from the THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health describing safe sleep guidelines.
