Blessed by beautiful Pine Island weather on Saturday, Feb. 28, the Pine Island Garden Club celebrated its 23rd Annual Garden Gala at the St. James City Civic Association Center. Hundreds of islanders and visitors relished the various festivities.
Over 60 vendors exhibited their art, crafts and garden/plants products. There was plenty available to satisfy thirst and hunger as treats were offered by the PIGC bake sale, Jolly Rogers & Captain Pies, Savage Skillet and Blue Duck Ice Cream.
The Lucky Bucket, Spin-the-Wheel games, the Big Draw and 50/50 raffles offered chances to win neat gifts donated by island businesses. Live entertainment was provided by Jim & Jan, Kinfolk, Swallowtails and Lightly Seasoned artists. The MPI Fire Department also offered a static display.
Gala chairperson Nancy Estabrook commented on the great turnout and the euphoria at this family fun annual event. She offered special thanks to the St. James City Civic Association for the use of their property and the First Baptist Church availing their parking lot for the shuttle service, saying that it is on days like this that one can recognize Pine Island is a truly special place.
The proceeds from the gala are used for the benefit of the community. The Garden Club, acting as a service club, maintains the grounds at the Kiwanis Children’s Park, Phillips Park, Museum of the Islands, Bokeelia Post Office and the Pine Island Elementary School.
The club also financially supports many local benevolent organizations such as the Calusa Land Trust, Pine Island Food Pantry, CROW and Beacon of Hope.
