JEA offers daily water-use alerts as Northeast Florida faces Phase II water shortage

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – JEA is sending daily water-usage, leak and high-bill alerts to customers to help them manage utility use, avoid unexpected charges and protect local water supplies as Northeast Florida faces ongoing dry conditions.

The alerts — delivered by email, text or phone — notify customers when unusual water usage is detected so they can identify problems quickly and take action before costs escalate, the utility said.

“JEA is committed to delivering real value to our customers by helping them stay informed and in control of their utility usage,” Charles Moreland, JEA’s chief customer experience officer, said in a statement. “By providing timely alerts and easy-to-use tools, we’re helping customers catch problems early, save money and do their part to conserve water.”

Customers sometimes receive notices showing continuous flow over an extended period, often a sign of an undetected leak. Left unaddressed, leaks can waste thousands of gallons and significantly increase monthly bills. Common causes include running or leaking toilets, dripping faucets, irrigation system or sprinkler-head leaks, outdoor spigot leaks and pool or water-feature leaks.

The alerts and online tools come as the St. Johns River Water Management District has declared a Phase II water shortage, calling for increased conservation across the region. By identifying leaks early and reducing unnecessary use, customers can help preserve local water resources, JEA said.

JEA recommends customers fix leaks promptly, limit irrigation and follow local watering guidelines, adjust sprinkler systems to avoid overwatering, install water-efficient fixtures and monitor daily usage through their online account.

The utility offers free water-usage assessments and conservation resources, and customers can sign up for customized usage alerts that send notifications when thresholds are reached.

“Small changes can make a big difference,” Eric Davis, JEA manager of utility analytics, said. “We’re here to give our customers the tools, information and support they need to make smart decisions and avoid surprises.”
