The city of Sanibel announced that an online community survey, which was created for the recently initiated update of the Sanibel Plan, is available and open for public completion.

Hardcopies of it were distributed at the first community workshop on Feb. 19. The results of the survey will be used to guide the updating of existing and creation of new goals and implementing policies contained in the Sanibel Plan.

“Public input is vital in the update of the Sanibel Plan because it is a reflection of the community’s vision for the future,” Planning Department Director Paula McMichael said.

The Sanibel Plan is essentially a “road map” that guides decisions on land use, private investment, green space programs and development of public projects. It describes the community’s history, current state and future vision. The city noted that the Sanibel Plan will not answer all questions about the future, but it serves as the city’s foundation.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and it is open to island residents, as well as business owners and visitors. It covers a variety of topics, including factors respondents use in determining where they will live, threats to Sanibel’s quality of life, and concerns and opportunities for the future.
