The 21st annual “Ding” Darling Lecture Series will continue with bestselling author-photographer Paul Bannick on March 26 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Roost at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel.

He calls woodpeckers “the heartbeat of our forests.” Bannick will speak on the topic, which is based on his latest book, “Woodpecker: A Year in the Life of North American Woodpeckers.” The New York Times featured his book in its “In the Garden” article on Feb. 24 about woodpeckers, and the Foreword Indies Awards Book of the Year Awards named it as a finalist in the Nature category.

Bannick has written five other books about woodpeckers and owls. His work has been featured in bird guides from Audubon, Peterson, The Smithsonian, Stokes, The National Wildlife Federation, and Birds of the World, and it has appeared in a variety of publications from The New York Times and Birds and Blooms, to American Way and the Seattle Times. Bannick has appeared on NBC Nightly News, Evening Magazine, and NPR stations and programs, including Travels with Rick Steves and BirdNote.

A book signing will follow the lecture.

The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge co-hosts the series with the refuge and through financial support from sponsors. Hank and Linda Spire are sponsoring this lecture.

The remaining series schedule is as follows:

– April 2: Beekeepers Association of Southwest Florida, “Live Hive & Taste: Observing Live Bees with Honey-Tasting”

– April 9: Author and conservationist Tina Morris, “Return to the Sky: The Surprising Story of How One Woman and Seven Eaglets Helped Restore the Bald Eagle”*

– April 16: Sanibel author Charles Sobczak, “The Living Gulf Coast: A Nature Guide to Southwest Florida”*

*Book signing will follow

Seating is limited on a first-come basis. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs. Most of the open-air seating is under cover, however the DDWS suggests sunscreen, bug spray and weather-appropriate attire.
