What was expected to be the most lopsided men’s March Madness game in 27 years lived up to the billing on Friday in Tampa, Florida, as the (1) Florida Gators manhandled the (16) Prairie View A&M Panthers in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, picking up the second-largest win in NCAA Men’s Tournament history and largest win in program postseason history. The defending champion Gators prevailed 114-55, covering the 35.5-point spread (winning by 59 points) and advancing to the second round for the second straight year.

Florida dominated both ends of the court, but its overwhelming size and physicality proved too much for a Prairie View A&M team that won the SWAC Tournament and beat Lehigh, 67-55, in First Four competition.

The Gators led for the final 33:10 as the Panthers made five 3-pointers in the early going before falling silent from beyond the arc over the remainder of the contest, going just 1 of 15 from downtown to close the game.

Let’s take a look at what went down with some Fastbreak Takeaways.

It was over when … guards sophomore Boogie Fland and senior Xaivian Lee drained consecutive 3-pointers to push the Gators ahead by 44 points with 16:15 to play. The Panthers played tough to open the second half but quickly saw their progress erased by some pinpoint shooting.

Florida used a 10-0 run to go up 54 points with 9:41 to play and an 11-0 run to lead by 62 with 1:57 left. The Gators took a game-high 63-point lead twice inside the final 90 seconds and scored the program’s most points in March Madness history (114). The NCAA Tournament record for largest victory was 69 points.

First half focus: Though Florida opened the game playing its normal, physically dominant brand of basketball, Prairie View A&M refused to be pushed around. The Panthers made 5 of 7 attempts from downtown, opening the game with a 15-15 tie after 7 minutes. The Gators responded by doing what they do best, clanging and banging inside to create an 18-0 run over 5 minutes as they started 15 of 18 from inside the arc and held the Panthers to seven straight missed shots. Florida ultimately outscored Prairie View 45-6 over the 13 minutes before the break as Fland started 5 of 5 from the field with a half-high 13 points.

Exceptional efforts: Fland only made one basket in the second half yet still finished as the game’s leading scorer with 16 points on perfect 6 of 6 shooting. He made both attempts from downtown and went 2 of 2 from the line, contributing four assists, two steals and a block with only one turnover. He was one ofa season-high seven Gators who scored in double figures as juniors forward Thomas Haugh and center Rueben Chinyelu each scored 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting, junior F Alex Condon contributed 13 points, junior G Urban Klavžar posted 11 points and 10 points were scored by Lee and senior C Micah Handlogten.

Chinyelu grabbed 13 rebounds to complete his 19th double-double of the campaign, setting him alone in Florida’s history books for most in a single season.

Odds & ends: Florida improved to 2-0 all-time against Prairie View, 23-0 against teams outside the power conferences over the last two seasons … the Gators are now 52-20 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, 18-6 in the first round (10-1 in their last 11 opportunities) and 6-1 under Golden … Florida is now 17-1 as a No. 1 seed; it has advanced to the Final Four on all three prior occasions … the Gators this season improved to 24-1 when leading at halftime, 27-1 when leading with 5 minutes left, 26-5 when outrebounding an opponent, 10-1 when forcing more turnovers, 21-2 when shooting 45% or better, 25-0 when outshooting an opponent, 6-0 when shooting 40% or better from 3-point range, 18-2 when attempting more free throws, 23-2 when 4+ players score in double figures and 17-0 when 5+ players score in double figures

What it means: The Gators did what they were supposed to do. They overwhelmed an undermanned and undersized opponent. Most importantly, Florida rebounded from a pair of horrific shooting performances with one of its most efficient games of the season. Other than allowing five 3-pointers in the first 7 game minutes (equating to 20 given up across 47 minutes of basketball dating back to the Vanderbilt game), it was a relatively flawless performance from the No. 4 team in the nation.

The Gators finished with margins of +34 on the glass and +54 in paint scoring. Florida had 29 assists on 45 baskets, 18 fastbreak points and 23 second-chance points. UF had its largest rebounding differential and set a program record for most assists in an NCAA Tournament game. They never trailed in the game while scoring more points inside (64) than Prairie View did overall (55). In fact, UF could not have scored a point over the final 21:05 and still won.

What’s next? Florida moves on to play (9) Iowa on Sunday in Tampa. The Gators have (somewhat amazingly) never played the Hawkeyes on the hardwood, considering they have played three times in football bowl games this century. UF is 13-7 all-time in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with its victory last year snapping three straight losses. However, Florida is 20-2 against teams seeded No. 9 or worse in NCAA Tournament play. The Gators are seeking back-to-back appearances in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011-14.
