Los Angeles Rams‘ defensive back Quentin Lake left last week’s matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars very impressed by rookie Travis Hunter.

While appearing on the ‘Up and Adams Show’ with Kay Adams, Lake described how he watched Hunter quickly recognize how the Rams’ defense was defending him, and he then shared that info with Liam Coen and the coaching staff to come up with a way, on the spot, to counter.

“When you’re in TV timeouts or have a little bit of a timeout,” Lake told Adams, “you can see offensive players talking to coaches of what the defense is presenting, what coverage they were in the last play or plays before, and I had saw him a couple times and he’s like, ‘hey, these DBs are doing this, what do you think about this?’ And I’m overhearing their conversation and it’s funny because one of my teammates saw that and were like, ‘hey be ready, they’re scheming something up on the sideline right now’ because they were having a conversation about stuff that we were in.

Lake continued, “And for a young guy to take accountability and be able to do that, that just shows how much confidence he has in himself and really the coaches to put himself in a position to make plays. And I was like wow. To be able to do that at Year 1 that’s goes to show how mature he is. He’s already a pro’s pro and all credit to him. I was impressed.”

Coen wanted to get Hunter involved more offensively in this game, and that’s exactly what happened.

Hunter would end up playing 67 of the 77 offensive snaps. He also led the Jaguars in receiving, hauling in eight receptions for 101 yards with a touchdown.

This was Hunter’s first 100-yard performance, and that touchdown reception was the first of his NFL career as well.

Defensively in this game, Hunter would play only 14 snaps but had a pass breakup while covering Davante Adams on his lone target.

As Coen described this week, the Jaguars will use the bye week to evaluate Hunter’s playing time on both offense and defense moving forward.

“He’s proving everybody wrong,” said Lake. “He’s going out there and doing exactly what he said he wanted to do, which was go and play offense and defense, and he’s doing it at a high level.”
