After a thrilling 67-61 first-round win over eighth-seeded Clemson, No. 9 seed Iowa (22-12, 10-10 Big Ten) gets its toughest test of the season against top-seeded Florida (27-7, 16-2 SEC) in the second round of March Madness in the South Region on Sunday.
The Hawkeyes meet the defending national champion Gators from inside Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Fla., with a berth in Iowa’s first Sweet 16 since 1999 on the line. Iowa’s win over Clemson was its first in the NCAA Tournament since 2021.
Senior point guard Bennett Stirtz led Iowa with 16 points, but the Hawkeyes’ biggest star shot just 4-of-17 from the field. Iowa needs Stirtz to deliver his finest if the Hawkeyes are to spring the NCAA Tournament’s biggest upset so far.
Iowa junior guard Kael Combs and junior forward Alvaro Folgueiras authored key performances in the Hawkeyes’ win over the Tigers. Combs finished with 15 points and Folgueiras added 14.
