L. Thomas Chancey

OBITUARY

Tom, a Fort Lauderdale landscape architect, ISA Certified Arborist, and passionate advocate for trees, passed away peacefully at his home on March 11, 2026, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving children.

Tom is survived by his three children, Jeremy Thomas Chancey, Jennifer Chancey Van Williams, and Kaela Chancey Roffman; six grandchildren, with one more on the way; and four great-grandchildren. He was the only son of Marjorie Overstreet Chancey and Lloyd Edgar Chancey.

Tom’s faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses was the foundation of his life. A man of honor, integrity, and deep conviction, he openly shared his belief in Jehovah and in the promise that the Earth will one day be restored to paradise.

Throughout his career, Tom dedicated himself to the care, preservation, and relocation of trees. He was the owner

of L. Thomas Chancey and Associates and operated several related ventures, including Artistree, a tree-care and pruning company, and Softscapes, a tropical garden gallery in Fort Lauderdale.

Tom was widely known for his long-standing “Save Our Trees” advocacy and founded the nonprofit Tree Bank, which rescued and relocated trees threatened by development throughout South Florida.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at the Stranahan House in Fort Lauderdale on May 27, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a tree be planted in Tom’s memory.
