It has been a weird few days in Florida.

After stories involving trashed Airbnbs and a violent road rage incident that escalated to the point of someone biting a police officer, this latest situation stands out for a different reason. This one, thankfully, ends a lot better.

A man was pulled over on Interstate 4 after multiple callers reported something you do not hear every day: a pickup truck driving down the highway with what appeared to be two missiles strapped to a rack in the bed.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, several drivers called in after spotting the unusual cargo, prompting troopers to locate and stop the vehicle. From a distance, the objects reportedly looked like missiles mounted in the truck’s bed, which is more than enough to raise concern on a busy public highway.

At that point, ignoring it is not really an option.

Law Enforcement Treats the Situation as a Real Threat

To their credit, authorities treated the situation seriously. Florida Highway Patrol troopers intercepted the vehicle and worked to determine whether there was any actual threat after receiving multiple calls from concerned drivers.

According to WESH 2 News, a bomb squad was also contacted as a precaution while the situation was being evaluated. When something looks like a potential danger, especially in public, it will get a response.

The driver explained that the missiles were not real, and officials said they were plastic display pieces purchased as a kit online and used for event purposes. He also reassured authorities that no explosive material was involved.

Once the situation was fully assessed, authorities confirmed there was no threat to the public.

A Strange Situation With a Straightforward Outcome

With no danger found, the situation was resolved without incident, and the driver was ultimately sent on his way. Just like that, what could have been a major emergency turned into one of the more unusual traffic stops you will hear about.

Better Safe Than Sorry

Still, it is hard not to pause at the image of a pickup truck cruising down I-4 with what appear to be missiles in the bed. In Florida, that somehow feels both surprising and completely believable at once.

If nothing else, it is a reminder that people will report even the slightest suspicion, and law enforcement will respond accordingly. And honestly, that is probably how you want it. It is also worth appreciating the Highway Patrol for doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

Better to check out a pair of fake missiles than ignore something that turns out to be real. As the Florida Highway Patrol put it on social media, #NeverADullMoment in Tampa.
