Martin Landaluce earned a milestone win Sunday when he upset Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6(2) at the Miami Open presented by Itau in the third round. With the victory, the #NextGenATP Spaniard advanced to the fourth round of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the first time.

In his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting against Khachanov, the 20-year-old played with remarkable authority and composure. Despite taking on an opponent nine years his senior, the Spaniard controlled the match from the outset, striking 25 winners compared to just 12 from Khachanov. Landaluce’s serve also proved effective, as he won 78 per cent (23/32) of his first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to seal the upset in one hour and 32 minutes.

The result is the latest highlight in what is quickly becoming a defining week for Landaluce in Miami. Having entered the tournament as a qualifier, the Spaniard has pieced together an impressive run, also including a second-round upset of 17th seed Luciano Darderi. Following his third-round win, the 20-year-old jumped 13 spots to No. 123 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Coming into the tournament, the 2022 US Open boys’ champion had just two tour-level wins to his name, the first of which came in Miami in 2024 against Jaume Munar.

The next test for the young Spaniard will be a fourth-round meeting with Sebastian Korda, who upset World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz earlier on Sunday.
