Two people were taken to the hospital Sunday night after they nearly drowned when their van plunged into the water at a Fort Lauderdale marina, fire rescue said.

According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the incident happened in the 2300 block of W. State Road 84 just after 7:45 p.m.

Once at the scene, police were able to remove a man from the van, who had injuries that were consistent with nearly drowning.

Fire rescue said the man told crews there was a second person who was in the van, and divers entered the water and pulled out a woman.

The man and woman were both taken to the Broward Health Medical Center for treatment.

Their names or conditions were not released.

A witness in the area shared cellphone video with NBC6 that showed yellow tape that was placed at the scene of the incident.

Other witnesses spoke to NBC6 about what they heard and saw.

“I was sitting in my camper, and all of a sudden, I hear sirens start going,” Liam Lenihan said. “All of a sudden, boom, right through the gate, blew into pieces. They drove into the back, into the water. The guy got rescued out of the car, and they started CPR on him. He came back to life. Then the girl, she didn’t get pulled out ’til 15-20 minutes later.

“State troopers, fire rescue, three ambulances all coming in to over here, and ladder trucks,” Kristina Berggren said. “It was just a lot of action going on.”
