A new development on four properties in north Downtown Tampa is one step closer to reality.
The city has selected a developer for a mixed-use affordable housing community.
A proposal submitted by PMG Affordable has been selected.
The development team also includes the Tampa Housing Authority, Bank of America Community Development Company and DuCon.
The development team plans to create a mixed-use community with approximately 1,150 residential units, 70 percent of which will be dedicated to affordable and workforce housing.
David Iloayna is the Director of Real Estate Development with the Tampa Housing Authority.
“Proximity to downtown is very meaningful to the development of affordable housing, because we have never had such within this proximity. Where job is located, where access is located, where people can literally walk from their home to a job site.” Iloayna told WMNF.
Iloayna says they budgeted around 530 million dollars total cost for the project, but says that may change.
“To have them located where [the] job is, to have affordable housing, not isolated, but to be a part of the job concentration center helps a lot to make this thing affordable.” Iloayna said.
In a statement, Mayor Jane Castor says they are still early in the development process.
Ilonya says the Housing Authority has a “huge” waiting list, with roughly 30,000 people in need of affordable housing.
According to a press release, they’re set to redevelop four properties in north Downtown, including the former Army Navy Surplus Market building.
