Scaffolding is gone from the queue building of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom. The coaster has been closed over a year and is scheduled to reopen in early May.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment
On Sunday, March 22, we saw crew members removing the scaffolding tower that has been on a queue building for several weeks.
By the end of the day, the scaffolding was gone. There are no obvious changes in the area but it looks like the poles sticking out of the building were repainted. Compare to photos from December.
On Monday morning, March 23, we didn’t see many signs of construction. Some crew members were working on the ground, but we didn’t see any in the queue building.
From Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, we did see construction materials on the ground. The metal beams installed near the edge of the Big Thunder Mountain site were covered with chainlink fencing and now scrim. This could be to separate the coaster from the ongoing construction of Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars-themed area.
Some pavement near the entrance to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad also remains to be refurbished. And there are plastic sheets over some of the entrance railings.
When Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens, it will have an updated opening scene with a transformation of the Rainbow Caverns, refreshed Audio-Animatronics, and gold props. The ride’s entire track was replaced.
