FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—The City of Fort Myers is taking steps to make roads safer by introducing an automated traffic enforcement program.

The selection committee choseRedSpeed Florida in a Monday meeting to manage this initiative, focusing on school zones and traffic lights to catch speeders and red-light runners.

Southwest Florida has already seen one of RedSpeed’s programs in action, with the company launching speed-detection cameras in school zones in bothCape Coral andPunta Gorda.

“They need it at school zones and red lights,” said Joe Prieth, a Fort Myers resident. “There’s a lot of traffic that goes through these red lights and a lot of accidents at this particular intersection every day. So they need that.”

The program will cover everything from design to installation and maintenance. However, the specific program(s) Fort Myers will implement have not yet been decided.

The city said the next step is to take it to the council for approval.
