Pilot program brings trash bag dispensers to Treasure Island beach

Two have been installed as part of the program

The city has partnered with Treasure Island- Adopt a Beach, which is refilling the dispensers

The hope is that people will grab one, throw their trash in it, and take it to a trash can before leaving.

Paul Cardamon, sustainability coordinator for the city, said this pilot program is in its first month.

“We’re hoping to reduce a lot of litter because we do have some hotspots on the beach where it tends to accumulate,” he said.

The two dispensers are set up in areas where the most trash is seen.

Cardamon said this is to combat the cans, food wrappers, plates, and other garbage that end up on the beach.

“We were getting like 1,000 people, and the beaches were just trashed,” he said. “We were trying to think of solutions of how can we reduce the amount of trash on the beach.”

Beachgoer Mark Oughton said he just recently noticed the free trash bag dispenser near the beach entrance.

While he’s a bit skeptical, he said a program to help keep our beaches clean could be helpful.

“I saw them, actually, yesterday,” he said. “I came yesterday too, and my only concern is that, you know, it’s a great idea, but I’m just worried about people grabbing 10, 12 bags.”

Cardamon said that so far, the program is successful.

People are using the trash bags, and Treasure Island — Adopt a Beach is refilling the bags once they run out.
