Sinner creates Masters 1000 history in Miami with R3 win

Italian cruises past Moutet to reach fourth round

Jannik Sinner made ATP Masters 1000 history on Monday evening at the Miami Open presented by Itau, where he earned a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory against Corentin Moutet.

With his straightforward third-round triumph inside Hard Rock Stadium, the Italian has now won 26 consecutive sets at the Masters 1000 level, moving clear of Novak Djokovic, who previously held the record at 24. Sinner had equalled that mark with his second-round win on Saturday in Miami before surpassing it in the third round.

“I am very happy,” Sinner said following his victory. “This sport is unpredictable, so we try to keep attention as much as we can and we’ll see what is coming in the next round.”

Sinner’s streak traces back to last November at the Rolex Paris Masters, where he clinched the title without dropping a set. He carried that form into March, repeating the feat at the BNP Paribas Open. Thanks to his two victories in Miami, Sinner has now won 13 consecutive Masters 1000 matches.

Against Moutet, there were few signs that the 24-year-old’s streak was in danger. Sinner controlled the tempo of the clash with a dominant serve, winning 87 per cent (33/38) of his first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats. He also swung freely off both wings, firing 23 winners compared to Moutet’s 11 and gave the Frenchman no chance to find rhythm in the match.

With his one-hour, 11-minute victory, Sinner improved to 2-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series and extended his unbeaten streak against left-handed players to 21 matches.

 

“There’s Ben [Shelton], Tien, Shapovalov, Moutet,” Sinner said. “I don’t want to forget other players, but we try to prepare in the best way possible, trying to be tactical and as perfect as possible.”

The No. 2 player in the PIF ATP Rankings will now face Alex Michelsen in the fourth round on Tuesday, continuing his bid to become the first man to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’ since Roger Federer achieved the feat in 2017. Michelsen defeated Alejandro Tabilo 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to set the fourth-round clash with the Italian.

Beyond another triumph in Miami, there is more reward for Sinner this fortnight. With his great rival Carlos Alcaraz losing to Sebastian Korda on Sunday in the third round, the Italian is now in a prime position to close the gap in his World No. 1 battle with the Spaniard, as Sinner is not defending any PIF ATP Rankings points in Miami.
