The Dolphins announced news on Achane’s contract

The Miami Dolphins have rebuilt their roster this offseason, offloading a majority of their highest-paid players. As a result, the Dolphins lead the NFL in dead money on their salary cap. Fortunately, Miami has significant draft capital after trading away players like Jaylen Waddle.

While general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has seemingly torn down the roster, the team still has some foundational pieces left. One of those is Pro Bowl running back De’Von Achane, who is fresh off the best season of his career as he finished with a career-high 1,838 scrimmage yards. With the Dolphins moving a large number of players this offseason, Achane has been the subject of trade talks and rumors; however, reports indicate that the Dolphins have said he is not available.

Despite that, it would seem unrealistic for the Dolphins not to listen to a potential trade if they are blown away by the offer. After all, Sullivan previously said, “My job as the general manager is if the phone rings, I have to listen. Any player is tradeable at a certain price.” Now, the Dolphins announced contract news on their star running back.

Miami Dolphins Restructure De’Von Achane’s Contract

Miami Herald writer Barry Jackson reported that the Dolphins had restructured De’Von Achane’s contract. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio added, “Miami added four void years to the deal, allowing the bulk of the contract to be paid as a signing bonus and pushing $3.6 million into future years.”

Achane is hoping his restructure is not the only update to his contract this offseason. He previously indicated a desire to sign an extension prior to the 2026 season.

Regarding a potential extension, Jon-Eric Sullivan said, “We want him to be part of this thing moving forward… De’Von Achane is a difference maker. He’s a three-down back, a home run [hitter]…We will have those conversations with him as well as some other guys as we move down the road, but that’s going to be later in the summer.”

Previously, ESPN’s Dan Graziano had reported that the expectation was the Dolphins would try to extend Achane. He wrote, “Expect the Dolphins to work on extensions this offseason for running back De’Von Achane, center Aaron Brewer and linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Miami is under new management and likely entering something of a rebuild.”

De’Von Achane’s Value

Alongside Aaron Brewer, who also had his deal restructured, Achane was among the best performers for the Dolphins during the 2026 season, evidenced by his Pro Bowl selection. He led the league with 5.7 yards per carry, and was a big reason why Miami had somewhat of a second-half turnaround.

Led by the running game, Miami won six of their final eight games in which Achane played in. Despite this, Achane may not have the value of someone like Waddle, who was able to net Miami a late first-round pick. Unlike Waddle, Achane only has one year remaining on his contract and does not play what many around the NFL consider to be a premium position. The Jets were in a similar position last season with running back Breece Hall, and they opted not to trade him as no team met the price of a third-round pick during the 2025 trade deadline.
