During last week’s Village Council meeting, a resolution to select the firm of Berry, Dunn, McNeil and Parker for a Key Biscayne Community Center assessment, audit and feasibility study, not to exceed $215,100, passed by a 6-0 vote.

Parks and Recreation Director Todd Hofferberth explained that the data-driven analysis will get the best of what the center has to offer, noting that 20 years ago, “spinning was the big thing” in fitness, and now some of the components cater to seniors and those with disabilities.

The analysis process will take 10 months with community engagement, of course.

“(The Community Center is) one of the gems of the county but it’s showing its age,” Village Manager Steve Williamson said. “This is what Todd is trying to do and do it better (for) the future of the center.”

The center opened in 2004.

Councilmember Nancy Stoner said this analysis will be valuable because back in 2004, racquetball was the sport of choice.

“A lot of money and a lot of space could have been devoted to a sport that now has (little) demand,” she said.

Money for the cost of the analysis already had been approved as part of the latest FY 2026 budget.
