PLANT CITY, Fla. — A man is facing a first-degree murder charge days after crossing state lines while fleeing a Plant City shooting that left a man dead.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4 a.m. Sunday to reports of a man shot multiple times near the intersection of Branch Forbes Road and I-4.

When deputies arrived, they found a man suffering from upper body trauma and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Through investigative efforts, detectives said they determined the shooting stemmed from an earlier incident involving several people at a bar in Plant City.

The same group later came across each other again at a gas station, where things escalated into a shooting.

On Monday, HCSO identified the suspect as 36-year-old Maico Carbajal, who deputies determined fled Hillsborough County and was going west on I-10.

Working with multiple law enforcement agencies across state lines, Carbajal was reportedly tracked through Alabama and Louisiana into Texas.

With the assistance of the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office in Texas, Carbajal was located and taken into custody without incident.

“You cannot outrun justice. Our detectives worked tirelessly, crossing state lines and coordinating with our partners to ensure this suspect was taken into custody,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “Our commitment to protecting this community knows no limits, and we will not stop until those responsible for violence are held accountable.”

Carbajal is currently being held at the Chambers County Jail in Anahuac, Texas. Along with his first-degree murder charge, he is also reportedly on an ICE detainer. He is waiting for extradition back to Hillsborough County.
