Scholar Athlete of the Week: Chiles’ Madison Joyner

  • March 26, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – There’s no selling short what the Chiles indoor volleyball team has accomplished over the past four years. They reached the final four in 2023, and captured back-to-back state championships the last two years. Madison Joyner has been there every step of the way, and now that it’s beach season, she’s still hungry for more.

“Being constantly relentless when no one is watching, other people have to look up to that,” she said of her drive to be the best.

That’s just what se does, and who she is.

“She never ceases to go after a ball, no matter where it is,” said beach volleyball head coach Angela Hultquist. “She’ll dive, sacrifice her body. She is so tough and works so hard.”

“It is my goal everyday to be there and do things 110% effort,” she added.

It’s that effort that helped propel Chiles indoor volleyball to two state championships, with Joyner leading the team in aces and in digs, and what motivates her to finish the same way now that it’s beach season.

“We are hungry. We are chasing that high again!”

There’s nothing more that Joyner wants than to replicate indoor’s same success outside.

“We know what it takes. We know the grit,” she said. “We are probably more heavily indoor players, but if we all come together with that same mindset we can make it that far.”

“It’s a very competitive team,” added Hultquist. “They’re used to success. They want to keep going that way.”

For Joyner, that success translates over to the classroom, where she has a 4.3 GPA.

“I think that goes along with just being such a high achiever, to not let down in any area of her life but to always strive for excellence,” said Hultquist.

“Being competitive in all realms of your life leads to a successful person, and I want to be successful,” added Joyner.

In the classroom and on the court, and Joyner won’t be happy with anything less.

“We are very used to winning. Being a good teammate and that hustle, we know what it takes and we know what to give to that. I think if we do give that, we have a great chance.”

A great chance to finish to finish on top, again. Joyner will play college volleyball at West Florida. She said she hasn’t decided on a major just yet, but is leaning towards something in animal sciences.
