TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB) – Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is sending a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, urging the league to suspend the Rooney Rule.
Uthmeier argues the rule, which requires teams to interview minority candidates for certain coaching and front-office jobs, violates Florida law by involving race in hiring decisions. He called it discriminatory.
“We are demanding the NFL suspend the Rooney Rule, and failure to do so may result in enforcement actions against the league for race-based discrimination,” Uthmeier said. “NFL teams and their fans don’t care about the race of the coaching staff.”
Uthmeier gave the league until May 1 to stop enforcing the rule for NFL teams in Florida.
