Orlando, Fla. — Youngstown State’s bowling team bounced back from a tough performance on Friday to earn four wins and post the sixth-highest pinfall in the field on Saturday at AMF Sky Lanes.

The Penguins climbed from 16th place up to 10th with one qualifying match remaining on Sunday. YSU totaled 4,830 over five traditional matches on Saturday, which was 290 pins higher than its total in five Baker matches on Friday.

Among its four victories on Saturday, the Penguins beat three teams ranked in the top six of the National Tenpin Coaches Association Preseason Top 25 Poll.

YSU beat second-ranked Nebraska 926-898 to start the morning, and the Penguins’ best set of the tournament followed in a 1,017-874 win over Emmanuel. Youngstown State then beat No. 6 Arkansas State by 152 pins, 990-838, before dropping its only match of the day to No. 14 Mount St. Mary’s, 943-912. YSU’s round finished with a 985-982 win over No. 3 Vanderbilt.

Leyna Kratzer was YSU’s top individual finisher for the second straight week, placing 13th with a 1,021 set. Gianna Varano finished 26th with a 967 set, and Kara Beissel was 45th with a 919. Amber Mason and Amy Chrzanowski bowled the final four games of the round, and Mason averaged 203.78 while Chrzanowski averaged 193.50.

Youngstown State will bowl one more Baker pinfall match against Texas Southern at 8:25 a.m. on Sunday. Two best-of-seven Baker matches will follow to determine the tournament’s final standings.
