A Coral Gables woman died Saturday in a boating accident off Key Biscayne, when authorities say she was ejected from a boat and then was run over by the same vessel.Â
Social media posts showed a vessel circling in the water, out of control, until it could be stopped by authorities.
Two people, a man and a woman, were aboard the 27-foot boat in the vicinity of West Point in Biscayne Bay, when they were ejected, said Ariel Callender, a spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.Â
The accident took place around 10:40 a.m., she said.Â
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue recovered both victims from the water. Neil D. Schwabe, 54, of Coconut Grove, was identified as the operator and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The deceased passenger was identified by the FWC as Claudia Balmaseda Orellanes, 33, of Coral Gables.Â
The location of the accident was initially reported as being off Nixon Beach, a sand bar popular with boaters near Key Biscayne — and the location of previous boating accidents. But Callender said Saturday’s accident took place to the north, near West Point, which is closer to Crandon Park and south of the Crandon Marina.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.Â
