The islands community is invited to celebrate the holiday weekend with a family-friendly event.

The Sanibel Recreation Center will host Sanibel Island’s Great Spring Egg Hunt on April 4 from 10 a.m. to noon on the Sanibel Ballfields at the center, with the gates opening at 9:30 a.m. Free and open to the public, it will feature egg hunts, a guest appearance, contest, experiences, activities and more.

“We enjoy hosting any events during the year and throughout the seasons, and this is just another extension of that,” city Recreation Department Marketing & Events Coordinator Denise Dillon said.

“And it was so well received last year with close to 1,000 participants,” she added.

Attendees will get the chance to visit with a special guest.

“The Easter Bunny will be on hand to greet everyone,” Dillon said.

The age-specific egg hunts will kick off 11 a.m.

“We will be having three simultaneous egg hunts,” she said. “The three fields will be broken down by age groups.”

The groups will be ages 4 and under, grades K-3, and grades 4-8.

“There’s going to prizes in all of the eggs — candy, small toys,” Dillon said, noting that Pinocchio’s Original Italian Ice Cream, The Magic Bus Ice Cream & Caffeine, and The Shack of Sanibel also provided coupons for sweet treats.

“Each field will have additional prizes,” she added, citing Easter baskets and more.

Attendees can enter the Spring Bonnet/Cap Contest, with the winners announced at 11:15 a.m.

“They will be broken down by the same age groups. We will have a winner in each age group,” Dillon said, adding that there will be prizes for them.

New at this year’s event will be the Butterfly Garden Experience.

“Participants can enter a self-enclosed tent where they’ll be able to see native Florida butteries and they can learn a little bit about them,” she said. “It’ll be fun for all the kids to experience that.”

There will also be interactive experiences and hands-on activities.

“Our community partners that will be on hand will be providing small activities for all of the children,” Dillon said.

The center will offer face painting.

“And we’ll have some lawn games, like cornhole,” she said.

Attendees can enjoy live entertainment, with snacks and drinks supplied.

“We will have a deejay, that is new this year,” Dillon said. “The deejay will be playing some games.”

Limited parking will be available at The Sanibel School. Additional parking will be available at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s tram parking lot, with shuttle transportation provided.

“We also encourage people to ride their bikes and carpool,” she added.

The public is invited to come out.

“It helps to bring the community together, creates memories for our local children and for our community who may have family in town for the holiday weekend,” Dillon said. “And we like to think of it as a nice, new tradition that kicks off the spring season in a meaningful way for everyone.”
